The ultimate loss of virginity September 08, 2008 - October 11, 2008

Weissenbacher has been interested in the tacky and downmarket artistic reality since he graduated at the Viennaise Art College as the student of famous abstract informel art representative Arnulf Rainer. Through his „nice pictures,” depicting toys with astonishing accuracy, he tries to show the face of an absurd, grotesque world, that is becoming more and more the substitute of reality. Although his works deal with kitsch, they are quite dissimilar from pop-art, as the artist doesn’t merely quote from the popular culture, he speaks about the ’poesy of kitsch’, and stresses the naturalistic depiction of kitsch to the edge of our tolerance. For Weissenbacher kitsch becomes interesting when we generally reject it. After a period where Weissenbacher experimented in his paintings with three-dimensional, realistic, totally flat and graphic elements and the illusion of space and different layers, he had reached some kind of "“freezing-point”. Since the beginning of 2008 he tries to find back to a more lively and libidinous way of working and painting. "“At the moment, I am more or less in an experimenting, transitional stage not knowing, where the journey will end. Thus: the ironic exhibition-title "“The ultimate loss of virginity”. Further: the depicted figurines and objects which seem so harmless and innocent, transport explicit content, which is everything else than inculpable”.
