Anna Nemes [1989, Budapest] is attracted by representations of the human body. She uses canvas, brush and paint with an airy lightness. ‘Zsuzsi - Big’ is a piece from Nemes’s diploma work depicting bodybuilder women. This series of paintings dealt with a reappraisal of the boundaries and anatomical ideals of the female body. Nemes continues to be intrigued by the subject of bodybuilder women and has recently directed a feature film with László Csuja, entitled ‘Gentle’, on this topic which was selected for the competition programme of the Sundance Film Festival in the US. In Nemes's paintings, the figures, whether in sensual or in bizarre positions, carry a special intimacy, but they keep their mystery and do not reveal their secrets. The use of water is central to Nemes’s technique. The highly soluble watercolour and acrylic paint characterises the paintings, which the artist layers on a snow-white canvas with virtuosity and sensuality. The watercolour technique is unusual for paintings of such large-scale compositions as this one, and was created after several experimental phases. Nemes has developed this technique which has become a hallmark of her later white period, using the specific qualities and surface-forming power of watercolour to create coherent surfaces by dripping without brushstrokes. The painting thus builds upon itself, the evaporation of the water creating patterns with the pigments, revealing time itself in the membranes of the gradually drying stains. While the viewer perceives the flatness of the layers, the material itself creates a sense of space, its treatment making the figure transparent and airy. The fundamental vulnerability and uncertainty of the watercolour technique also articulates the ephemeral identity of Nemes's characters. The protagonist of ‘Zsuzsi - Big’ combines masculine and feminine character traits mixing strength and solidity with a startled, almost pleading gaze, thereby drawing a flexible boundary around the personality.
