The floating canvas ‘Sailing’ is an absolute expression of movement. The crashing of the waves, the power of the sail, and the subtle undulation of the canvas all create an illusion of wind rushing over the sea and the power of the sailboat's movement. Gilot was a close friend of the fathers of Cubism and Fauvism, George Braque and Henri Matisse, and defined the basis of hier art in the fusion of the two traditions. ‘Sailing’ is a beautiful example of this where the tight structure of forms and the emotional role of vibrant, vivid colours are combined. An exciting element in the painting is how Gilot overlays the coherent, almost homogeneous colour surfaces with a free gesture of ‘splash’; the white specks rising in front of the boat giving the impression of splashing water. The viewer can almost feel the refreshing, salty spray of the sea on his/her skin.
