‘Landscape with Columns and Fallen Head’, a watercolour painting of an ancient Greek site, is a composition that recurs in several of Gilot's oil paintings such as ‘Continuity’, ‘Ruins of Delos’ and ‘The Game of Chance’. In the summer of 1962, Gilot travelled with her children to the Aegean Sea to visit several Greek islands, absorbing the atmosphere of antiquity and myths, in line with Greek mythology as one of her favourite subjects. She started to depict this journey in an abstract way, the famous ‘Labyrinth’ series, but in 1964 she began once more to reintroduce figurative elements into her paintings, mostly landscapes of Greek ruins with fallen heads against a background of the sea. In 'Landscape with Columns and Fallen Head' the painted space is filled with Gilot's imagination. She plays with the shapes and planes of the background, sometimes the sea opens up, sometimes the scenery is compressed. The humid contrasts of cold and warm tones bring life to the scene whilst the cubic edges of clouds are to be found in severa ofl her paintings.
