Françoise Gilot's ink works, dating from the late 1970s, represent a unified style within the artist's oeuvre. Black strokes on a white ground allow for a play of contrasts and shapes, the images, taking an unconventional route, leading us to different landscapes and spaces, each one with unique shapes and motifs. The dividing lines are defined, the forms often geometric, giving rhythm to the alternation of black and white. Gilot assembles the image from scattered fragments, partly imaginary and partly of actual memories, to become ‘as real as in dreams’. "The painter, like the poet, lives in his own world", says Gilot. The viewer is invited to experience Gilot's world, a world where space that exudes tranquillity comes alive, and where we are drawn in and given the opportunity to immerse ourselves in her fantasy.
