About the works
Despite his Russian origins, the Kossuth Prize awarded El Kazovsky is one of the most characteristic persons of the contemporary Hungarian art scene. His artistic career began at the end of the ‘70s. Besides his paintings, his installations and performances are also significant. A common feature of his works in various genres is that they are all about the connections and relationships between the characters of his personal, subjective mythology based on classical mythology and philosophy. In his “theatre” – as the stage-like spaces and drop-like elements, cypresses, chimneys, rock and curtains all refer to the theatre – the story focuses on constant unfulfilled longing. The desired characters are present on his works as faceless torsos, ballerinas, Fates, Venuses, while one can observe the longing party (the subject of the artist himself) too: a dog-like wandering animal, who is the mediator between the painting and the viewer.
