About the works
Endre Rozsda is an internationally known abstract-surrealist painter, the friend of André Breton, the mentor of Françoise Gilot, founder and member of the so-called European School which assembled the most progressive Hungarian art tendencies after the Second World War – an influential figure of the 20th century art scene. He lives in Paris between 1938 and 1943, then, after staying in Hungary for a longer period (1943-56) he moves back to the French Capital, this time permanently. In the last two decades of his life he works at the renowned studio-house at the Montmartre, the Bateau-Lavoir: as has been in his whole life, he is solely interested in painting and creating. Rozsda’s art is controlled by two key concepts, time and dream, which are hiding in his images all the time. Since the ‘50s he has made colourful paintings full of small motifs. The kaleidoscopic and ornamental texture of his surfaces becomes a main characteristic of his style throughout his career.
