SEBASTIAN WEISSENBACHER

About the works
Despite the main characters of Sebastian Weissenbacher’s painting are unanimated objects: the viewer encounters plastic toys, animals, dolls, but the artist has the power to ensoul and animate them, hence the works become narrations in which the fate of the characters turns out to be sometimes tragic, sometimes humorous. The paintings might have a confusing effect on the viewers, because it seems as a sort of ‘kitsch-orgy’ at first sight – a visually forceful divertissement of banal objects wrapped often in flashy colours and tight, homogeneous surfaces. What is unambigous in his pictures is the powerful cynism and hidden humor, accompanied by the strong feeling that Weissenbacher’s works are far from being trivial. If we scratch the pink shiny glaze, deep Human problems, existential matters and references to current political and religious events can be discovered. As Lóránd Hegyi writes in one of his essays, Weissenbacher is a quiet, sharp and clever observer who is hiding behind a clown’s make-up.
