The exhibitions will be opened by László Földényi F. Aesthete and art critic
The Várfok Gallery, as one of the first private contemporary art galleries in Hungary, celebrates its 25th Jubilee this year. In recognition of this special occasion, numerous exhibitions and special programmes have taken place during the year at the gallery. The highlight of the year, the VÁRFOK 25 Anniversary Exhibition, will open on the 30th November, the birthday of the gallery. It will focus on the history of the Várfok Gallery and its place in the Hungarian contemporary art scene over the past 25 years.
The Várfok Gallery may be considered as the cradle of the Hungarian contemporary art market, and in this respect is an outstanding example of best possible practice. Its quarter-century of history, its continual development, continuity and non-profit making projects, as well as its constant striving to achieve the highest possible standards, makes the Gallery unique with regard to the Hungarian art scene.
The Jubilee Exhibition will take place simultaneously in three venues: at the Várfok Gallery, at the Várfok Project Room and at the 1st District’s Municipal Gallery, the Várnegyed Gallery. In each the visitor will be able to trace the highlights and history of the Gallery from 1990 to the present day.
The Concept of the Exhibitions
Visitors are invited to travel through time!
At the Várfok Gallery, in addition to the iconic works of the invited artists, archive photographs and material will recall memorable moments such as, for example, The Onion Dedication of László feLugossy and János Szirtes, the expansion of the Várfok gallery spaces, the last interview of Endre Rozsda before his death, the inauguration of Gallery19 by Françoise Gilot in 2007 and the legendary “pack” of El Kazovszkij from the Café Alkoholos Filc. Additionally, the exhibition will recall the one-time visual and cultural sites of the Portal and Garage Galleries which are now consigned to history.
The exhibition is designed to reflect the serious research work and documentation carried out over the past 25 years. In the realisation of its design, the Várfok Gallery acknowledges the assistance of László Csáki, Béla Balázs Award-winning visual artist and animation filmmaker.
In parallel, the Várfok Project Room, where in 1990, precisely on the 30th November the Gallery opened its doors, remembers its early beginnings with the joint exhibition of the work of Pál Gerber, Gábor Gerhes, Balázs Kicsiny and György Kungl.
Finally, we should like to convey our thanks to our many collectors for their continued support without which the Gallery, and its Artists’ Circle, would not be what they have become today. Through them the Gallery stands as an outstanding venue dedicated to promoting the highest standard of Contemporary Art in all of its many and varied aspects. In honour of the collectors, the Jubilee Exhibition will also extend into the ‘neighbourhood’ at the nearby Várnegyed Gallery.
Várfok 25 Jubilee Book
As part of the Jubilee Exhibition, the Várfok Gallery plans to publish a book, the purpose of which is the documentation of the last 25 years of the gallery. Besides contributions written by several important figures of the Hungarian contemporary art scene, and presentations by members of the permanent Artists’ Circle, the book will record every exhibition and project in the life of the Gallery. In this way the book will serve both as a reference point to art historians and researchers as well as representing an attractive and entertaining work for art lovers as in general. The book launch will take place during the exhibition period of 2016.
