Booth: 11
9th. -13rd. May, 2021

We are delighted to announce that the Várfok Gallery is participating at the Art and Antique art fair. The highlight of the Várfok Gallery’s stand will be a large selection of works celebrating the 100th birthday of Françoise Gilot.  The relationship between the highly renowned artist and the Várfok Gallery was established through Endre Rozsda, the Hungarian Surrealist painter and a great friend of Gilot. His works will also be showcased at the fair.
The presence and significance of Endre Rozsda, who was born in Hungary (1913, Mohács/H – 1999, Paris/F), yet spent most of his life in Paris, is undeniable in relation to the course of the history of 20th century art: he becomes one of the founders of the post-war progressive, Hungarian concourse called European School, he is a member of the private circle of André Breton and other surrealists, and he participates in several outstanding group exhibitions, in Cologne, Munich and Paris, focusing on the concepts and origins of surrealism.
Alongside the two internationally renowed artists the Várfok Gallery is presenting the works of two of its’ youngest, brilliantly skilled artists: Anna Nemes‘s highly sensitive, water coloured nudes, and Máté Orr‘s latest surreal, neo-baroque compositions.

Exhibited artists: Françoise GILOT (F/USA), Anna NEMES (H), Máté ORR (H), Endre ROZSDA (F/H)

GILOT 100

The painting career of Françoise Gilot (b.1921, Neuilly-Sur-Seine, France) is a story of triumph. Her oeuvre has taken a long time to receive its due appreciation. She has had to prove herself as an artist on many occasions until she was finally able to shrug off the label of “Picasso’s muse” and establish herself professionally as a first-class artist in her own right. Her art is rooted in the revolutionary golden age of 20th century art, when she came into direct contact with such eminent figures as Braque, Matisse, Juan Gris, Paul Éluard, André Breton, Aragon and Cocteau.

Since 2000, the Várfok Gallery has organised many exhibitions dedicated to the unparalleled lifetime work of Gilot and is proud to be her only European gallery enjoying a personal relationship with her and, additionally, carrying the largest available collection of her works in Europe.

Françoise Gilot’s works are represented in numerous museums and galleries worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (USA), the Museum of Modern Art in New York (USA), the Centre Pompidou, Paris (F), the Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris (F), the Musée de Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv (ISR), Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz (D) as well as in many prestigious private collections.

The Várfok Gallery pays tribute to this remarkable artist with a large-scale retrospective exhibition, which will open on Gilot’s 100th birthday, 26th. November, 2021. A series of celebratory exhibitions relating to the big anniversary exhibition will begin at the Art and Antique Fair.
