About the works

Endre Rozsda was born November 18th, 1913 in Mohács, Hungary. He began his career early in Hungary before deciding to move to Paris in 1938 where he continued his artistic studies at the École de Louvre. There he befriended artists who would also achieve world fame, Árpád Szenes, Alberto Giacometti, Vieira da Silva, Françoise Gilot, and Max Ernst.

He moved back to Hungary and remained from 1943-56. Within these years he became a member of the post-war progressive Hungarian art movement, The European School. Rozsda’s style was already Surrealist but after 1945 his work evolved to incorporate Lyrical Abstraction as well.

Rozsda’s body of work is driven by two quintessential terms, time and dreams, which are hidden in all of his artworks. He has been painting his highly detailed and colourful paintings since the 1950’s. One of the representative stylistic marks of his mature period are the kaleidoscope-like structures that mimic an ornamental fabric structure.

With his experiencing the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Rozsda permanently moved back to Paris. It was the following year that he had his first exhibition in Paris at the Furstenberg Gallery where he met André Breton who gave the shows opening speech. Rozsda was accepted by the surrealists, especially by Breton and continued to live his life successfully in the genre. During the final two decades of his life he worked in the prestigious Bateau-Lavoir studio house located in Monmarte, France.

In 1998 Endre Rozsda joined the Várfok Gallery. In the Spring of 1999 Várfok held our first exhibition of his works.

Endre Rozsda passed away September 16th, 1999.
